Carson Palmer to have Big Day in the Stat Book

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- Carson Palmer could be in for another busy day for the Oakland Raiders.

With top two running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson slowed this week by sprained right ankles, the Raiders may need to rely on their passing game when they visit the Baltimore Ravens.

Palmer threw the ball 61 times last week against Tampa Bay as the Raiders (3-5) were forced to play catch-up in the second half after losing McFadden and Goodson to the injuries. Neither back practiced Wednesday and their status remains in doubt for Sunday's game against the Ravens (6-2).

''We've got a plan in place if either or both of those guys are not able to play,'' coach Dennis Allen said.

That likely will involve lots of passing with no other proven halfback on the roster. Palmer set a career high in attempts in last week's 42-32 loss to Tampa Bay, completing 39 passes for 414 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.

With McFadden out for the entire second half, Goodson getting hurt in the fourth quarter and Oakland falling behind by 18 points, the Raiders ran the ball just three times in the second half - their fewest in eight years.

''You got to adjust to what your health is of your team, but you know it's a team that's had some yards rushing on them, especially the last couple of weeks,'' Palmer said. ''It's very odd. I have never seen that before in my career. So, there are some things we want to take advantage of in the run game.

Raiders Sign WR Derek Hagan

Raiders Sign WR Derek Hagan
Posted Sep 6, 2012

By Jerry Knaak

The Oakland Raiders Thursday signed veteran free agent wide receiver Derek Hagan.

Hagan, who was most recently with the Buffalo Bills, played in six games with two starts for the Raiders last season. The eight-year veteran had 11 catches for 114 yards with the Silver and Black last year before signing with the Bills and playing in four games with one start. He was released by Buffalo on Friday.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Hagan is a veteran of six NFL seasons, seeing action in 69 games with eight starts with the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Raiders and Bills. His career totals include 109 receptions for 1,221 yards and six touchdowns.

The Palmdale, Calif., native entered the league as the Dolphins’ third-round pick (82nd overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. He finished his collegiate career at Arizona State as the Pac-10 Conference’s all-time leader with 258 receptions.

To make room on the 53-player roster, the Raiders waived cornerback Coye Francies.

MEMO TO REG: PRYOR CAN STAY

TERELLE PRYOR IS SHAKING THINGS UP IN THE EAST BAY
Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Oakland has a new favorite QB on the Roster ready to step up into the game any moment he is called upon. I want to see Terelle Pryor and Carson Palmer work as together in a duo for the Raiders. It will bring pro-style gamble as well, but what if all teams started doing this. Imagine how many great plays we aren't seeing because of player fatigue. Running Backs go in and out of the game frequently, so why don't teams utilize every position in the same fashion.

I Hope to see a lot of Terelle Pryor in the flat catching screen passes, that he then launches downfield to DHB or Street-Rod. Or in some other innovative offensive scheme that incorporates both in the backfield. Because these two have completely different sets of skills. CP3 has the sound mechanics, the precise accuracy, and the will to win. Many think the last one can't be taught, and I agree. TP6 has the will to win that some may say it's enough will to need no skill.

Dennis, whatever you decide to do with this team will be fine, just know that this group can dominate if used in the correct manner. Everything is where it is, at this exact moment, for a specific reason. And this group is here to wow NFL Fans for the first time since the "greatest show on turf."

Oakland Raiders trade Louis Murphy to Carolina Panthers

The Raiders traded wide receiver Louis Murphy to the Carolina Panthers on Monday, freeing up salary-cap room and a roster spot for one of a handful of promising youngsters.

The Panthers agreed to send the Raiders a conditional draft pick in exchange for Murphy. An ESPN report said the teams agreed on a seventh-round pick.

Murphy, 25, led all Raiders wide receivers in receptions and receiving yardage in 2009 and '10. His production dipped last season after a sports hernia injury caused him to miss most of training camp and the first five regular-season games.

Murphy could not be reached for comment. He took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to wish the Raiders well and thank his fans.

"Thanking God for this opportunity!" Murphy tweeted. "Super excited to be a part of the @Panthers organization! Can't wait! #letsgopanthers!"

Murphy entered last season as the Raiders' No. 1 wide receiver. He finished the season behind Darrius Heyward-Bey, Denarius Moore, Chaz Schilens and Jacoby Ford on the depth chart and with 15 receptions for 241 yards and no touchdowns.

Moore's surprise ascension, the quantum leap in performance by Heyward-Bey, along with strong showings by fifth-round draft pick Juron Criner and undrafted free agent Rod Streater this offseason, made Murphy's grip on a roster spot tenuous.

Murphy caught 75 passes for 1,130 yards in his first two seasons after being a fourth-round draft pick out of Florida. He said in early June that this season is a "crucial" one for him in terms of showing that last season's drop-off was an aberration.

"I have a big chip on my shoulder," Murphy said at that time. "I have a lot to prove. I hear the outside talking, and it's just part of me, with my mentality, that I have a lot to prove. Even if I don't, I just feel like I do."

This marked the second deal between Carolina and Oakland this offseason. In late March, the Raiders received running back Mike Goodson for backup offensive lineman Bruce Campbell.

Heyward-Bey pleaded no contest Monday in San Francisco to a misdemeanor for allegedly driving drunk across the Bay Bridge in April.

Heyward-Bey took what his attorney, Ivan Golde, called "a gracious plea bargain" offer from the San Francisco District Attorney: He pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge in exchange for a sentence of three years' probation, three months of DUI classes and some fines and fees.

Heyward-Bey "wants to put this behind him," Golde said.

Staff writers Steve Corkran and Sean Maher contributed to this report.

Denarius Moore Highlights

Denarius Moore Highlights Denarius was a key addition to the Raiders roster last year. He made the plays we would expect from a #1 wideout. I am not to stoked with the Raiders releasing Jason Campbell, in exchange for Carson Palmer. I am expecting Terrelle Pryor to step up and grab the reigns.
